Following on from his last album 'Population 4000' (2012), 'Candlelightwater' is Sam Forrest's sixth solo album, and his first to be made with former Giant Drag drummer Micah Calabrese; this influence reveals itself through a bolder use of rhythm and atmospherics reminiscent of records such as Sonic Youth's 'Goo' and Elliott Smith's 'From A Basement On The Hill'.
'Candlelightwater' uses minimal instrumentation with little more than drums, synth bass and guitar to push along Sam's vocals.
Recorded in North Yorkshire, UK, the pair were joined in the studio by vocalist Hayley Hutchinson (of Forrest's other group The Sorry Kisses) and fellow Nine Black Alps guitar player David Jones (most recently seen on stage with The Cribs).
Inviting the listener into a world of elliptical illusions and abandoned gods, 'Candlelightwater' is a slow-burning but quietly explosive album.
Recorded during the height of summer with the loan of a drum kit from Arthur Lee's 1960s psychedelic band Love, the basic tracks were completed over just two days.
The results are more bewitching than many will have expected from Sam Forrest, as the songs are bold, poetic and alluring.
